Job Application Advice

Your objective with the cover letter and your resume is to generate enough interest that you’ll be given a chance to interview for the position. Keep in mind that for most positions, most people that apply are never given the opportunity to interview. That’s why the cover letter, resume and follow up are so crucial to getting that chance.

Filling out a job application is typically a step taken just prior to the actual interview. As mentioned earlier it can occur at various times in the process. The following are some things to keep in mind if you’re filling out the application in the prospective employer’s office the day of the interview or prior to the interview:

  • Bring along a black ink pen to fill out the application
  • Be sure to read the instructions prior to filling out the form and be sure to follow directions. As a rule, always print and do so neatly.
  • Be sure to answer all questions however, if a question isn’t applicable it is ok to answer N/A (not applicable).
  • Make sure everything you write is spelled correctly and is accurate. Bring along any information you’ll need to fill out the application, also bring a copy of your resume.
  • If they ask for salary requirements, it’s best to put open or negotiable if possible.
